Lake Manyara National Park Safari – Home of the Tree-Climbing Lions

Nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park offers a scenic and incredibly diverse safari experience. Famous for its unique tree-climbing lions, massive herds of elephants, and thousands of vibrant pink flamingos framing the soda lake, it is a true jewel of Northern Tanzania.

A Scenic Wonderland of Water and Wildlife

Though relatively small, Lake Manyara National Park packs a massive ecological punch. Two-thirds of the park is covered by the beautiful alkaline soda lake itself, while the remaining land holds a lush groundwater forest, acacia woodlands, grassy plains, and thermal hot springs (Maji Moto).

Why Choose Lake Manyara?

Tree-Climbing Lions

Unlike most lions, the prides in Manyara have developed the rare, fascinating habit of spending their afternoons draped lazily over branches of acacia trees.

A Birdwatcher’s Paradise

Home to over 400 species of birds, the lake shoreline acts as a massive gathering spot for thousands of lesser flamingos, pelicans, storks, and herons.

Breathtaking Rift Valley Views

Enjoy dramatic backdrops with the steep cliffs of the Great Rift Valley escarpment framing your wildlife viewing on one side and a glittering blue lake on the other.

Lake Manyara Safari FAQ

While not entirely certain, wildlife behaviors suggest they climb trees to escape biting insects on the ground, catch a cool breeze away from the humid forest floor, and get a better vantage point for spotting prey.

Flamingos can be spotted year-round, but the best time for birdwatching is during the wet season (November to May), when water levels in the soda lake rise and migratory birds arrive in vast numbers.
