Overview

The Machame Route, also known as the Whiskey Route, is one of the most popular and scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This 7-day itinerary is carefully designed to allow proper acclimatization while offering a rewarding and adventurous climb through Kilimanjaro’s most diverse landscapes.

Beginning on the southwestern slopes of the mountain, the route passes through lush rainforest, across the Shira Plateau, and into dramatic alpine and semi-desert terrain. Key highlights include the acclimatization hike to Lava Tower, the thrilling ascent of the Great Barranco Wall, and an overnight at Barafu Camp in preparation for the summit attempt.

The summit push begins before midnight, reaching Stella Point at sunrise before continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the Roof of Africa, the descent follows the Mweka Route, passing through moorland and forest zones to Mweka Gate, marking the successful completion of an unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.

Day 1: Arrival – Arusha
Airport pickup, hotel transfer, trek briefing, equipment check, and overnight at Tulia Boutique Hotel & Spa.
Day 2: Machame Gate (1,490m) – Machame Camp (2,980m)
Hiking: ~7 hours | Habitat: RainforestAfter breakfast, drive to Machame Gate and begin your ascent through lush montane forest. Expect muddy trails and rich vegetation before arriving at Machame Camp, where your crew will have your camp ready.
Day 3: Machame Camp (2,980m) – Shira Camp (3,840m)
Hiking: ~6 hours | Habitat: MoorlandClimb out of the forest into open moorland with expansive views of the Shira Plateau and Western Breach. Overnight at Shira Camp with colder nighttime temperatures.
Day 4: Shira Camp – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,950m)
Hiking: ~7 hours | Habitat: Semi-desertA key acclimatization day following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. Reach Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp, offering stunning sunset views beneath the Great Barranco Wall.
Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,950m) – Barafu Camp (4,550m)
Hiking: ~7 hours | Habitat: Alpine desertClimb the famous Great Barranco Wall, cross valleys and ridges, and arrive at Barafu Camp. After an early dinner, rest and prepare for the summit attempt later that night.
Day 6: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
